The Fiat 500 is also known as the Fiat Nuova 500. It is a city car built by Italian automaker Fiat since 2007. The car is produced in Tychy, Poland by Fiat Auto Poland S.A. and in Toluca, Mexico by Chrysler Group LLC. It is strictly a four-seater, three-door hatchback, the 500 is almost identical to the retro concept car Trepiùno that was presented in 2004.
The Fiat 500 was announced on May 5, 2006, with the first images being presented on March 20, 2007. The car was launched officially on July 4, 2007, with 250,000 people in attendance. This was the largest launch party held in the last ten years. It was displayed in the squares of 30 cities in Italy for the launch.
The Fiat 500 is available with four different trim levels: the Naked trim level. There are over 500,000 different personalized combinations of the 500 that can be made by adding all kinds of accessories, decals, interior and exterior colors, and trims. The car is also available with the Blue & Me navigation system. The American Sport version has the 1.4 litre Multi-air engine, which is manufactured in Michigan, United States.
At its launch three engines were made available: two petrol and one diesel engine. All the engines met the Euro5 standards. The 1.3 Multijet was equipped with a diesel particulate filter. The Fiat 500 was re-engineered on the rear, along the pattern of the Volkswagen Beetle, just like its bigger brother, the 1955 Fiat 600 so that it can meet the demands of the post-war market which called for economy cars.
Its small dimensions make it one of the easiest cars to park within the busy crowded urban streets.
Safety in the 500 is first-rate. All models come with front, side, curtain and knee airbags, which has helped it receive a five-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. Some versions of the 500 also feature driver aids like traction and stability control to help keep you on the straight and level.
Most of the plastics and fabrics used in the interior fit with the retro image of the 500, and it looks great and feels steady enough. It has demonstrated great reliability and confidence is there that it will stand the test of time and prove its critics, with ease.
Purchasing the Fiat 500 is a solid financial decision. It costs less to buy than rivals, and its impressive looks and styling add to its desirability. The TwinAir model generates just 94g/km of CO2, making it so environmentally friendly that it has been exempted from the London Congestion Charge, in United Kingdom. It's cheap to fuel and tax.
It comes standard with seven airbags, a CD/MP3 stereo, power steering, color-coded bumpers and electric mirrors. Even though lacking aircon, its makes up by providing alloy wheels and front fog lights.
It's a beauty that cannot be discredited for what it is and what it offers, because it does that perfectly well.
